count - all ages) 1 Ilkley H 267 75,87,105 Race Report The 33rd Wasdale took place in extreme heat & high humidity. The field was trebled over non-championship years by the double championship status. The main change to the race organisation was the adoption of an electronic timing system for recording split times at the checkpoints & collating results at the finish. This year we did not use the tally system where runners leave a plastic token at each checkpoint. In retrospect the organisers did not feel that the electronic system in its current format & used on its own gave sufficient safety assurance in real time. In future races the electronic system will either need modifying to cope with at least sequential numbering at the start & possible radio transmission from the recorders (or have a reader feature) at the checkpoints or be run as a supplement to the tally system. The Wasdale has some unique physical features, which make relaying of some radio transmissions essential. For this reason alone, all checkpoints need to be manned in any case. The sheer numbers at the race & the unfortunate behaviour of some who parked in the road leading to the overflow car park, some refusing to move even when asked by our marshal (which unfortunately earned him some abuse) caused temporary gridlock of the only Wasdale Head access. We are very grateful to the National Trust Warden who was very helpful in assisting with sorting out this problem. That said, most competitors were gracious, helpful & even offered a hand at registration & other duties. It was a pleasure to be there & the job was made that much easier. After the usual random kit check & pep talk, which included the emphasis on retirement / time out procedure for the runners the race started just over 7 minutes late with a field of 238. One thing I forgot to mention was that no-one should drop litter on the fell. I honestly did not believe I had to, after all, as FRA members we are all aware of the country code? At the finish, one intrepid CFR runner showed me the energy drink & power bar wrappers he had picked up en route. I can only appeal to all of you in future races to address this issue. Out on the course, Rob Jebb & Ben Bardsley led at the first checkpoint but Simon Booth joined them by Seatallan. Simon & Rob pulled ahead by Pillar but by Gable Jethro Lennox & Nick Sharp had caught Simon & the 3 stayed pretty much together until Scafell. Nick had a minute's lead over Simon at the summit, but was caught on the descent & led home by a further 1.5 minutes, Simon dropping to the finish in 17 minutes! An amazing finish. Nick had also increased his lead over Jethro to 2 minutes. Last year's winner Phil Davies won 4th place by increasing a lead of a few seconds over Jethro at Scafell to just over 2 minutes at the finish. The winning Borrowdale open team of 5's anchor-man Andrew Davies was the first V40. Then after 12 minutes Julian Rank from Holmfirth (also runner up V40 last year) claimed 2nd, with NYM's Joe Blackett 3rd 2 minutes after. The 1st V50 was Steve Jackson from Horwich, runner up CFR's Jackie Winn, 3rd counter Tom McGaff from Cheshire Harriers. The V60 class was won by Kieran Carr from Clayton, 2nd was Keswick's Dave Spedding. This year's ladies winner was Sally Newman from CVFR (also leading LV40) with a superb run at 35th overall, (17min faster than last year's winner Nicky Davies). 2nd lady was Carnethy's Jill Mykura in 44th place, still 9 minutes quicker, 3rd was Sharon Taylor from Bingley in 47th place - again 6min inside. The 4th counter was Eryri's Jackie Lee, and 5th was Elizabeth Batt (also 2nd LV40) running unattached. Remarkably in the conditions prevailing the first 4 ladies home all were quicker than last year's winner. The 2nd LV40 was Jane Meeks from Keswick, 3rd Ilkley's Alison Weston. The 1st (& only) LV50 was Clayton's Wendy Dodds. The winning open men's team mentioned above was Borrowdale comprising: Simon Booth (1), Phil Davies (4), Ben Bardsley (6), Jim Davies (7), Andrew Davies (8) total 26 points The winning open Lady's team was Ilkley Harriers comprising: Emma Barklay (75), Nicky Jacquierly (87), Alison Weston (105) total 267 points I apologise for the late placing of these results & report on the website - both I & some of the organising committee have taken short holidays - it's that time of year! - also I have had to re-arrange the format of the results as it became apparent that some competitors had been timed out at Pillar & Great Gable, had continued round the course & finished before some of the back markers. This contravenes our race rule 9. The electronic timing system does not discriminate this & because of the late start it was difficult to sort out these issues & some missing checkpoint 'dibbas' on the day. Once the manual check sheets & time boards had been collected in, I was able to confirm 2 runners had actually visited checkpoints where they had for whatever reason failed to 'dib' & would otherwise have been disqualified. Unfortunately we did have to disqualify 3 runners under rule 9. There is still correspondence rumbling on about these runners & a series of protests about the severity of the closing times - where runners admit that they were aware they existed. I can only state here that closing times have remained unaltered for at least 24 years & have been employed without fear or favour in all conditions. They are displayed at the registration, I remind runners verbally at the start. All runners sign entry forms to confirm they will abide by the race rules. The simple reason for these rules is for the safety of the runners. Checkpoint closing times are designed to restrict the exposure time. This is the only occasion since 1991 where we have had to disqualify runners for disobeying time outs. There will no doubt be further exchanges through the FRA & Fellrunner so watch these spaces. I would appreciate constructive comment - this is your race as much as ours. We only organise this event for your running enjoyment in that it represents an awesome challenging run in these wonderful mountains. Our sister race the Ennerdale has a similar reputation & similar closing times. From our point of view as race organisers, the only thing that is more important than your enjoyment is your safety on the fell.
